One divorce per 8 marriages in Iran

TEHRAN, Dec. 28 (MNA) – One out of every eight marriages ends in divorce in the country, deputy head of Women's Information and Statistics Center (WISC) said here on Sunday.

Nahid-Azam Ram-Panahi warned of an increase in divorce rate in border provinces and more developed ones, describing Kermanshah, South Khorassan, Razavi Khorassan, Qom, Tehran, and Qazvin as the provinces with highest divorce rate in the country.

Referring to the inverse relationship between the divorce rate and tradition, she said that traditional couples are less likely to split up than the non-traditional.

“As the rate is low in the traditional provinces of Yazd, and Hamedan,” she said in an interview with ISNA.

According to the early 2009 report by the Population Studies & Research Center in Asia and the Pacific, Ilam Province has the lowest divorce rate in the country followed by the provinces of East Azerbaijan, Golestan, Yazd, Chahar-Mahal Bakhtiari, and Sistan-Baluchestan.

Isfahan ranks fifth in divorce rate behind the provinces of Fars, Markazi, Kordestan, and Tehran, the report said.

Ram-Panahi also called “collaborative divorce” the most practiced methods of divorce in Iran over the past years, blaming cultural and economic problems for the most of separations.

In a collaborative divorce, the parties negotiate an agreed resolution with the assistance of attorneys. The parties are empowered to make their own decisions based on their own needs and interests, but with complete information and full professional support.

Iran’s divorces rate has been about 12.5% during the fist six months of 1388 (March 20 - September 22, 2009), she added.

Lamenting the fact that Tehran has the lowest marriage rate and the highest divorce rate in the country, Ram-Panahi noted, “One out of every four marriages in Tehran Province ends in divorce.”

According to the WISC’s figures, men aged between 25 and 29 and women aged between 20 and 24 were the most likely to divorce. And highest rate of divorces occur in the early years of marriage.

The figures also showed that the marriage age has reduced in the country over the first six months of 1388. There has been also a 4% decrease in the country’s marriage rate during the period.
