Welsh festival organizer invites Iranian storytellers

TEHRAN, Dec. 16 (MNA) -- Wales’ festival co-director David Ambrose invited Iranian storytellers to attend the “Beyond the Border”, Wales’ leading International Storytelling Festival in 2012.

Participating in Tehran’s 13th International Storytelling Festival which wrapped up Wednesday, he said that so far no Iranian has taken part in the Wales’ festival “but my participation here is providing an opportunity to invite Iranian storytellers to the festival in Wales.

“In the coming edition of the festival in (July) 2010, several storytellers from Armenia, Georgia and Iraq are taking part, and we intend to invite participants from countries on the Silk Road for the 2012 edition,” he told the Persian service of IRNA.

He then talked about the festival in Wales and said, “The festival is international in scope and tries to invite the best storytellers from around the globe. The spectacular three-day celebration of oral traditions takes place in the splendid grounds of St. Donat’s Castle on the picturesque South Wales coast.

“In Wales, storytelling has long been a profession and, over the past 20 years, has found its way among ordinary people. Of course, history shows that in older times, storytellers received money to tell their tales to princes and princesses who lived in castles, instead of sharing them with the common people.

“Storytellers in Wales make a living mostly by their performances at schools or at various festivals. School masters also warmly receive the storytellers,” he remarked.

The 13th International Storytelling Festival opened here on Sunday at the Institute for the Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults (IIDCYA).

Iranian storytellers competed with 15 of their counterparts from the eight countries of England, Sweden, Ireland, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Tajikistan and several more.
