Pakistan voices concern over missing Iranian diplomat

MANAMA, Dec. 13 (MNA) – Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi here on Sunday expressed worry over a continued holding of Iranian diplomat Heshmatollah Attarzadeh by militants who was kidnapped by militants in Peshawar in November 2008.

Qureshi regretted the security problems created by gang and terror groups in his country, saying no significant improvement has been made “in our campaign against terrorism.”

Referring to the two neighboring countries’ friendly relationships, Qureshi called abduction of Iranian diplomat one of the Pakistani government’s main concerns.

“I do express concern over the issue,” he said.

Qureshi met with Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki on Saturday evening on the sideline of the 6th Manama security conference.

During the meeting Mottaki called on Islamabad to make tremendous efforts to ensure the release of the Iranian diplomat.

The Pakistani minister said his country would do what is in its power to win his release.

Heshmatollah Attarzadeh, commercial attaché of the Iranian consulate in Peshawar, the capital of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP), was kidnapped from Hayatabad neighborhood when he was heading to his office in November last year.
