Pak lawmaker urges west to respect Iran’s nuclear program

Islamabad, Dec 13, IRNA -- A Pakistani lawmaker on Saturday urged the west to respect Iran’s right to develop nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

Talking to IRNA, Muhammad Ali Durrani Senator of Pakistan Muslim League-Q and former Information minister asked the western governments not to adopt discriminatory polices towards Iran.

“Technology has no religion and every country has a right to acquire technology for betterment of its people”, he said.

"Iran being the signatory of Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) can use nuclear energy for peaceful means, however, US and west have been suspecting on Iran’s nuclear program saying that Iran is trying to build an atomic bomb, which the Iran has strongly denied."

He said that the Western powers, especially the US, have been pressurizing Iran to roll back its nuclear programme, however, Iran being the member of NPT refused to do so.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said that Iran’s plan to build 10 new uranium enrichment plants was not aimed at confronting the UN atomic watchdog.

“I endorse the statement of Iranian President as Iranian leadership has always given a responsible statement on nuclear issue,” Muhammad Ali Durrani said.

The lawmaker viewed that pressure on Iran’s peaceful nuclear programme is not justified and the west has to change its policies towards Iran. He said that Iran is an important country of the region and cannot be isolated by building media pressure.

“Being a Pakistani politician I accept the official stance of Iran regarding its nuclear program,” he added. Muhammad Ali Durrani expressing his views said that Iran is a democratic country and there is no reason to doubt on the statements of Iranian leadership on nuclear program.

The politician opined that Iran has been cooperating with the International Atomic Energy Agency and following the international law regarding its nuclear program.

“Iran is a responsible country and it should be allowed to develop nuclear energy without any external pressure,” he said.

Muhammad Ali Durrani believed that west has been following discriminatory policies towards the Islamic countries.

“Dual standards of the west have always produced opposite result, look what are the consequences of war in Iraq and Afghanistan, the west has to move in a right direction,” he said.
