Iran says needs up to 15 nuclear plants

MANAMA, Dec. 12 (MNA) -- Iran needs up to 15 nuclear plants to generate electricity, the Iranian foreign minister said on Saturday.

Manouchehr Mottaki made the remarks at the IISS regional security summit in Manama, saying, "We need 10 to 15 nuclear plants to generate electricity in our country”.

Iran, the world's fifth-largest crude exporter, and its nuclear program is aimed at generating electricity so that it can export more of its gas and oil.

The IAEA Board of Governors, under pressure by the West, adopted a resolution against Iran on November 27. The resolution criticized Iran for beginning construction of a new uranium enrichment facility at Fordo and demanded that it immediately halt its construction.

Iran’s nuclear activities all are monitored by the international bodies; The IAEA has consistently verified the peaceful nature and the non-diversion of Iran's nuclear program.

The issue of passing a resolution — drafted by the United States, Germany, France, Britain, Russia and China — demanding Iran halt all construction work at the Fordo nuclear facility, has been completely politicized by Western countries.

The Islamic Republic has the right to develop its nuclear program and has fulfilled all its commitments as a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

The IISS regional security summit entitled “The Manama Dialogue” began today with the participation of over 300 delegates, including prime ministers, foreign and defense ministers, national security advisors and intelligence officials from 25 countries around the globe.

Focusing on the Persian Gulf security and security challenges in Iraq, and Afghanistan, the summit will be closed tomorrow.
