Iran calls on global community to control illegal drug smuggling

New York, United Nations, Dec 9, IRNA – Iran's ambassador and permanent representative in the United Nations called for more efforts of the world community to control production and smuggling of illegal drugs in Afghanistan.

In the meeting of Security Council on Tuesday on threats of production and smuggling of drugs, UN Secretary General as well as Executive Director of U N Bureau to fight against drugs and crime were present, too.

The latest developments concerning drug smuggling in the world were discussed in the meeting.

Iran's Ambassador Mohammad Khazaei in his speech said that cultivation, production and smuggling of drugs are among main challenges of the world community and fighting against them needs world cooperation and efforts.

Referring to the chairmanship of Iran on the UN Drugs Commission duration one year, Khazaei expounded on Iran's vast steps toward fight against threats of drugs.

He added that Iran's police force had suffered thousands of martyrs and allocated billions of dollars to create border fortifications and control posts in its border lines.

The ambassador continued that Iran has also succeeded to discover and confiscate high volumes of different types of drugs which constitute 80 percent of total world discovery and confiscated amounts of drugs.

Referring to the upcoming international meeting in London on Afghanistan, Khazaei called international community to be committed to its obligations and increase its efforts concerning control of production and smuggling of drugs in Afghanistan.

Iran will assume chairmanship of the UN Drugs Commission for a period of one year from this December./end
