Int'l aid convoy for Gaza leaves London

London, Dec 4, IRNA – An international aid convoy, led by 15 ambulances, is assembling in London this weekend in the latest attempt to break Israel’s continuing siege of Gaza.

The convoy, named 'The Return to Gaza' is the second from the British capital, is organised by Viva Palestina in association with the Palestine Solidarity Campaign.

Viva Palestina spokesman Kevin Ovenden told IRNA that the convoy, which would leave on Sunday, was due to arrive in Gaza on December 27, the first anniversary of the start of Israel’s latest bombardment, in which over 1,400 Palestinians were slaughtered.

The convoy, which has more international flavour and is taking a different route, promises to be bigger, with over 150 vehicles of aid and humanitarian supplies, Ovenden said.

“The convoy will travel through Europe to Turkey, Syria, Jordan and Egypt with over 350 participants, mainly from Britain, but including a large delegation of US and Turkish citizens,” he said.

The first, which arrived in Gaza in March, involved a huge procession of around 100 vehicles carrying more than Pnds 1 million (Dlrs 1.4 m) of practical aid.

The vehicles travelled through France, Spain, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Egypt before breaking the Israeli siege.

It was commonly described as the largest British convoy to head across North Africa since World War Two over sixty years ago.

Like the first, the Return to Gaza, is being led by leader of the anti-war Respect Party George Galloway, who was expelled from Britain’s ruling Labour Party for his outspoken criticism of the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

Ovenden said that the 15 ambulances leading the convoy were dedicated to the memory of 15 medics and paramedics who were killed in the line of duty during Israel’s bombardment of Gaza./end
