Iranian musician finds setar and santur harmonious in Madrid concert

TEHRAN, Dec. 2 (MNA) -- Iranian setar virtuoso Masud Shaari said that the Madrid performance experience demonstrated that setar and santur can be harmonious musical instruments for duet performances.

Shaari and santur virtuoso Javid Afsari-Rad accompanied by Sina Shaari on oud and Niraj Kumar on tabla gave a performance on November 12 at the Buena Vista Cultural Center in Madrid.

Masud Shaari told the harmonytalk website that Afsari is an innovative composer and a capable player and referred their joint performance as most interesting.

Afsari also spoke of Masud Shaari as open mind Iranian musician who can accept the music of other cultures.

Shaari’s inclination to perform multi-cultural music and Afsari’s experience in composing cross-cultural music made the performance a fine sampling of central Asian, Persian and Indian music.

“In the art world, artists from different countries can easily perform beside each other since art knows no boundaries and artists cannot be separated from each other by borders,” Shaari mentioned at the beginning of the concert.

Born in 1961 in Tehran, Shaari was deeply attached to Iranian music and started learning santur at the age of thirteen.

With proficiency in traditional Persian music, he has tried to restore the forgotten melodies and rhythms of traditional Persian music and mix them with modern music.

Born in Isfahan, Javid Afsari Rad began studying the santur and the traditional Persian radif at the age of sixteen with Parviz Meshkatian and Faramarz Payvar.

In Norway, where he has lived since 1986, Javid is considered an innovative performer and an ingenious composer. His highly acclaimed work in 2002 included the album “Combinations”, featuring well known musicians from Iran, India, China, Morocco, Senegal, Gambia and Brazil, and the album “Caravan” with musicians from Iran and India.

Shaari and Ahmad Yahyazadeh on percussions accompanied by Javid Yahyazadeh on ney and Mehrdad Mohammad-Jani on oud gave a performance at Paris’ Salle Cortot Hall on November 6.

The Madrid performance was sponsored by the Persepolis Cultural Center in Spain.
