83,000 Iranians HIV positive

TEHRAN, Nov. 29 (MNA) – An estimated 83,000 of Iranian nationals have so far been diagnosed with the HIV, director of the AIDS control department of the Health Ministry said here on Sunday.

The figure is based on the UNIADS research patterns, Abbas Sedaqat said.

According to the official figures, 20,130 individuals were “registered” as AIDS patients across the country in the second quarter of 1388, Sedaqat said at a conference to mark the World AIDS Day.

The current Iranian calendar year began March 21, 2009.

A total of 3,409 Iranians have died of the virus over the second quarter of the year, while the death rate was 3,315 in the first quarter, Sedaqat said, citing the Health Ministry’s recent report.

The report blamed drug injection for 76.6 percent of the AIDS transmission across the country. Sexual and prenatal transmissions have infected 13.3 and 0.8 percent respectively.

Men account for 93 percent of the HIV patients, and women comprise 7 percent of the country’s infected population, the report added.

There has been 17% decrease in number of AIDS sufferers worldwide over the past eight years, Sedaqat said, adding that the rate has declined by 25% in East African countries and 10% in South and East Asian states.

There are now 32 million people living with HIV, including 2.1 million children worldwide.

WHO figures show that Africa, with 11.6 million AIDS orphans, has the highest rate of HIV patients in the world - around 67 percent of them living in sub-Saharan Africa, Sedaqat explained.

World AIDS Day has been observed around the globe on December 1 each year since 1988. It is aimed at raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection.

This year, the day will be marked on the theme of “Universal Access and Human Rights”. Government and health officials will also observe the event.

World AIDS Day is important in reminding people that HIV has not gone away, and that there are many things still to be done.

During the 2008 some 2.7 million people were infected with the virus and an estimated 2 million people died from AIDS, UNAIDS reported.
