Thailand's (A)H1N1 deaths pass 100

BANGKOK, Aug 19 (TNA) – Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health on Wednesday confirmed 14 new Influenza Type A (H1N1) fatalities, raising the country’s official total death toll to 111.

The ministry issued its weekly report on the situation of the swine flu outbreak in Thailand from Aug 9-15, confirming 14 new deaths, including seven male and seven female patients. Eighty-five per cent of them had chronic diseases such as obesity, heart disease, respiratory disease and diabetes, said Dr Paijit Varachit, deputy permanent secretary for public health.

Beginning April 26, Thailand has recorded the total number of deaths related to the Influenza Type A(H1N1) at 111.

The outbreak of the new flu has continuously spread in the provinces while the number of the new infections among young people aged between 11-24 years has decreased, he said.

The Bureau of Epidemiology expects the outbreak will continue during the transition from the rainy season to winter when seasonal flu also spreads.

He advised people to wash hands frequently and to wear face masks when they are in crowded places.

He said the National Influenza Centre has monitored possible resistance of the A(H1N1) virus to the anti-viral drug, Oseltamivir for more than four months. So far, there has been no drug resistance in the virus samples collected from flu patients, said Dr Paijit. (TNA)
