Pakistan Strengthens Security, Tourism Policies To Reshape Global Perception

ISLAMABAD, Feb 20 (Bernama) — Pakistan is intensifying security measures and introducing new tourism policies to reshape global perceptions and position itself as a safe and attractive travel destination.

Muhammad Farrukh Rafiq, Director of Pakistan’s External Publicity Wing, acknowledged that for years, Pakistan has been associated with conflict due to its geographical proximity to Afghanistan, a region historically impacted by wars involving major powers.

However, he said the security landscape in Pakistan has significantly improved, creating a more conducive environment for both domestic and international travellers.

“The security situation in major cities is very good, and people can travel freely.

“In 2020, around 300,000 foreign tourists visited Pakistan, while over 10 million domestic travellers explored the northern areas last year. This indicates significant growth in the country’s tourism sector,” he told Bernama.

Speaking after his presentation on ‘Pakistan’s Untold Stories: Unveiling Pakistan’s Tourism Potential’ during the Media Exchange/Visit of Journalists from ASEAN member states, Muhammad Farrukh highlighted various measures being taken to attract more visitors.

He said Pakistan has introduced a more tourist-friendly visa policy, including visa-on-arrival for most countries and the removal of visa fees to encourage greater international arrivals.

“The government is also making large-scale investments in infrastructure development and security enhancements to make Pakistan more appealing to international tourists,” he added.

Recognising the growing influence of social media in shaping perceptions, Pakistan is also encouraging tourists to share their experiences online to showcase the country’s scenic landscapes, rich cultural heritage and diverse tourism offerings.

Meanwhile, in efforts to ensure a safer environment for both tourists and investors, Pakistan is actively engaging in negotiations with Afghanistan to curb groups that pose security threats.

Earlier, 23 journalists from ASEAN member states and Timor-Leste gathered in Islamabad for the media exchange/visit programme, an initiative aimed at strengthening media cooperation between the two regions.

Held from Feb 17 to 22, the programme is organised by Pakistan’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting with support from the ASEAN Secretariat. A series of activities have been lined up to enhance professional engagement and cross-border media collaboration.

Key highlights of the visit include media training sessions at the Information Service Academy in Islamabad, and visits to major institutions such as the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Pakistan Television Network and the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority.

This initiative underscores Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening ties with ASEAN countries in media and information exchange. It also provides a platform for journalists to gain first-hand insights into Pakistan’s media landscape, regulatory framework and cultural diversity.

The programme is expected to pave the way for closer ASEAN-Pakistan media collaboration, broader information sharing and a more interconnected regional media ecosystem.
