Foreign Ministry condemns G-8 statement on Iran election

Foreign Ministry spokesman Hassan Qashqavi on Saturday strongly condemned the recent statement issued by G-8 states on Iran's presidential elections describing the move as meddlesome and hasty.

According to the Information and Press Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Qashqavi recalled that some 85 percent of eligible voters took part in a lawful, free and competitive presidential election which was regarded as a turning point in a religious-democratic country, a vital fact which is non-existent in democratic societies of the West.

Over the past 30 years, some 30 democratic and fair elections have been held in the country and the massive turnout in the country's presidential election is a good proof which indicates the trust of voters on the sound election mechanism in Iran, he said.

The people in the world were expecting the G-8 to adopt a proper stance in dealing with their problems, he said.

On recent meddlesome stance taken by the speaker of European parliament on developments in Iran, he said that Iran regards such acts as irresponsible and unacceptable and strongly condemns them.

The fact is the Iranian supervisory body, the Guardian Council as the legitimate entity is to hear the complaints lodged by candidates and the body has not yet finished its job, he said.

The upcoming visit by the European parliament speaker and his entourage to Tehran would be a positive move to help broaden parliamentary ties and cooperation between Iran and Europe but if they fail to meet the two side's mutual respect and interests it will not be fruitful, he said.

Referring to comments by the European parliament speaker, he said such visit under the current circumstances will not help broaden and uphold relations between the two sides and run counter to the spirit of friendship and mutual cooperation, he pointed out.

Iran calls for expansion of parliamentary relations and cooperation with European parliament based on mutual respect and interests, he said adding that the country is determined not to allow anyone to interfere in the country's internal affairs.

"If Hans-Gert Pottering is sincere in his comments on sense of responsibility by the European parliament on violation of human rights, essential freedoms, respect for dignity of humans, he should have supported innocent and defenseless people in Gaza while they were trapped by the savage and inhuman attacks of the Zionist occupiers," Qashqavi said.

During mass killing of innocent people in Gaza, the European parliament failed to carry out its duties as expected by the world public opinion and its speaker, Hans-Gert Pottering, showed no interest in visiting the region to exert pressure on the Zionist occupiers or express sympathy with the oppressed people of Palestine, he said.

The Islamic Republic of Iran advises the European parliament to avoid misusing human values and principles and instead of meddling in the internal affairs of other countries, try to respect their rights based on international code of conduct, he said.
