Qatar Takes Part in 3rd Anniversary of International Day of Women Judges Hosted by UN

New York, March 12 (QNA) - The Judiciary Supreme Council has participated in the 3rd anniversary of the International Day of Women Judges on the margins of the 68th session of the Commission on the Status of Women of the United Nations in New York. Judge Dr. judge Hessa Al Sulaiti chaired the judicial delegation participating in the session. The convention was aimed to promote the women's presence in the judicial field, whose significance is demonstrated in being the first -of-its-kind global initiative in the history of the international cooperation between the Judiciary Supreme Council as a judicial authority and the United Nations represented by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), as one of the most critical events that back the State of Qatar’s unwavering efforts and reflect its global humanitarian sense inspired by the permanent constitution of the country. The participation of the Judiciary Supreme Council in this event stemmed from the State of Qatar's initiative to dedicate an international day for women’s judges through the 2nd High-Level Meeting of the UNODC's Global Judicial Integrity Network hosted by the State of Qatar in 2020. The meeting endorsed the launch of a leading initiative to devote a global day for women’s judges to be internationally celebrated under the UN umbrella. In addition, the initiative is an annual occasion to reaffirm the significance of women's engagement in the public institutions, including the judiciary ones, along with the international community's ironclad commitment to taking the participatory and representative decision at all levels that require balance between the two genders. For his part, HE President of the Supreme Judiciary Council and President of the Court of Cassation Dr. Hassan bin Lahdan Al Mohannadi underlined that the State of Qatar, along with its judicial authority steadfastly back the role of women professionally and humanely, in addition to bolstering their role in the Judiciary field stemming from their enduring centrality in all past global efforts to keep up with the sustainable development goals, primarily the files of empowering women and equality between both genders in all life fields, particularly the judiciary profession. HE the President of the Supreme Judiciary Council so far laid out an initiative to upgrade this international occasion during the 2nd High-Level Meeting of the UNODC's Global Judicial Integrity Network hosted by Doha during Feb. 25-27, 2020, one of the largest international gatherings for the chief justices and judges in the history of international judicial cooperation. Under this initiative, His Excellency pledged a draft resolution in collaboration with the mechanism of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to include the International Day of Women Judges in the UN annual calendar, with massive efforts made by the permanent delegation of the State of Qatar to the United Nations in New York with the support of over 70 states around the globe. The 75th session of the UN General Assembly unanimously adopted the Qatari draft resolution and opted for Mar. 10 as the date to mark the International Day of Women's Judges. The Judiciary Supreme Council lived up to a new pledge towards the criminal justice pillar as one of the four pillars of implementing the Doha Declaration on Integrating Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice.
