Hockey5S World Cup: Malaysian Women Fail To Make Semi-Finals
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 26 (Bernama) -- Malaysian women's five-a-side hockey squad failed to advance to the semi-finals of the Hockey5s World Cup 2024 after a 4-6 defeat to South Africa in Muscat, Oman on Friday.
In the quarterfinal match held at the Hockey Oman Venue, Malaysia secured goals through Nurul Safiqah Mat Isa in the fifth minute, Nur Zafirah Aziz (8'), Dian Nursyakira Najwa Al-Wadqa Nazeri (10'), and Qhairunisya Mohd Zanili (14').
South Africa scored all field goals, through Reabetswe Phume in the 2nd, 15th and 17th minutes, Izelle Cilliers (25') and Toni Marks (28' and 30').
The defeat meant Malaysia will now have to go through a classification match for 5th-8th place against New Zealand, scheduled for 11 pm today (Malaysian time).
Team head coach, Nabil Fiqri Mohd Noor, in a video shared by the Malaysian Hockey Confederation (KHM) to the media today said the team must now ensure a strong finish by aiming for fifth position.
In another quarterfinal match, India thrashed New Zealand 11-1.
