Mottaki: Iran, Gabon to re-open embassies

Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said here Tuesday that Iran and Gabon have reached agreement to re-open their embassies in each other’s capital.

“Over the past four years, new grounds have been prepared for expansion of relations between Iran and Africa. Iranian and Gabon have had ties since the past few decades but due to lack of any embassy and lack of joint economic commission, their ties have not yet been promoted to a desirable level. Agreement has thus been reached for re-opening of embassies in each other’s capitals,” Mottaki told a a joint press conference with his Gabonese counterpart Paul Toungui.

He said ministers from the two sides will be assigned to form the Iran-Gabon Joint Economic Commission.

He added that presence of Iranian investors and economic activists in Africa will be benefitial to both sides.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Mottaki said Iran-Africa summit will be held in Tehran in the second half of current Christian year.

He thanked Gabon for supporting holding of Iran-Africa summit in Tehran.

“The summit can explore new areas of cooperation between Iran and Africa and expand Iranian companies’ partnership in power plant, dam, tractor, car and plant establishment projects,” he added.

He said a joint statement and four agreements on cooperation and consultations between Iranian and Gabonese foreign ministries and lifting diplomatic visa requirement were signed by Iran and Gabon today.

Toungui for his part said his country welcomes cooperation with Iran in various fields.

“Iran has gained tremendous power and has good capacity for cooperation with African states. So, it will be to our benefit to expand relations with Iran,” said Toungui, adding that the two sides will exchange different delegations in the fields of agriculture and industry with an aim of upgrading mutual ties.
