The UN Security Council Condemns The Terrorist Attack In Diyala, Reiterates Its Support For Iraq's Sovereignty And Unity

Baghdad / NINA / - The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the terrorist attack that took place recently in Diyala Governorate in Iraq, which resulted in the death of eleven army members. The council members, according to a statement by the UN mission, expressed their deep sympathy and sincere condolences to the families of the victims and the Iraqi government, and wished the wounded a speedy and complete recovery. The members of the Council renewed their support for the independence, sovereignty, unity, territorial integrity, democratic process and prosperity of Iraq. The members of the Council reiterated that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security. The members of the Council stressed the need to hold the perpetrators, organizers, financiers and masterminds of these abhorrent terrorist acts accountable and bring them to justice, and urged all states, in accordance with their obligations under international law and relevant Security Council resolutions, to cooperate effectively in this regard with the Iraqi government and all other relevant authorities. The members of the Council reiterated that any terrorist act is a criminal act and cannot be justified, regardless of its motives, place, timing and party. They reaffirmed the need for all states to confront by all means the threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts, in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and their other obligations under international law, including international human rights law, international refugee law and international humanitarian law. The members of the Security Council reiterated their support for the security of Iraq and for the ongoing war against terrorism, including the fight against ISIS./End
