Delegation outlines Iran’s views on weapons-free Middle East

The Iranian delegation participating in the 3rd preliminary meeting of a review conference on the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) in 2010 outlined Tehran’s views on the issues of weapons-free Middle East and Israeli threats.

The delegation also expressed concern over the threats the Middle East region was facing due to the growing nuclear program underway by the Zionist regime.

Pointing out that Iran was the initiator of the weapons-free Middle East scheme, the Iranian delegation also criticized the failure of the nuclear countries to act according to their commitments envisaged in the 1995 review conference.

Stressing that the Zionist regime's prime minister has explicitly admitted possessing nuclear weapons, it said the Zionist regime was the only real obstacle on the way of materialization of a weapons-free Middle East region.

The Iranian delegation also highlighted the recent savage attacks by the Zionist regime on some regional countries and the massacre of defenseless women and children in Gaza using banned and mass-destruction weapons and said the crimes well proved the degree of threat and danger the region was subjected to because of the Zionist regime’s possession of such arms.

Criticizing west’s double-standard treatment of the illegal possession of nuclear arms by the Zionist regime and exercising discriminatory measures against peaceful nuclear programs undertaken by other world countries, it further called on the meeting to frankly focus on the issue and said west’s huge support for Israel has encouraged the usurper and terrorist Zionist regime to speak loudly against the peaceful nuclear programs of other regional countries, believing that the law of jungle was ruling over the world.

The Iranian delegation further urged the meeting to adopt appropriate measures instantly to press the Zionist regime to stop its nuclear arms programs and bring all its nuclear facilities under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The third preliminary meeting of a review conference on the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty opened here last Monday. The Iranian delegation to the meeting is headed by Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Mohammad-Ali Hosseini. It includes a number of senior officials from Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization as well as Iran’s representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Under the provisions of the Treaty, a review conference is held every five-year. The NPT review conference will be held in Vienna, Austria, in 2010.

Participants of the preparatory meeting exchange views on the issues of nuclear disarmament, non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, peaceful use of nuclear energy and ensuring non-nuclear states that nuclear countries would never use nuclear weapons against them as well as the issue of a nuclear-free Middle East.
