Thailand ready to host regional meeting on influenza A (H1N1)

BANGKOK, May 6 (TNA) - Thailand is well prepared to host the regional meeting on influenza A (H1N1) in Bangkok planned for May 7-8, Disease Control Department spokesman Kamnuan Ungchusak said on Wednesday.

The agenda and the venue at the Dusit Thani Hotel is ready to welcome public health ministers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) plus three countries - China, Japan and South Korea, he said.

All ministers confirmed their participation except Myanmar, he said, adding that he believed all member countries will cooperate in tackling this important global health issue.

He said the meeting would propose switching the identification of the H1N1 by detection areas from the country name to the city name and thus preventing panic and hurting individual economies.

Screening outbound passengers from disease detection areas will be a focus for the meeting, as helping to prevent the spread of the disease from its origins is critical, he said

Technology and information exchange as well as regional antiviral stockpiles will be discussed in a bid to boost regional cooperation as part of building a regime of precautionary measures against the spread of influenza A (H1N1) and other new viruses.

A cooperative framework will be signed on Friday by the ASEAN ministers and the measures identified during the meeting will be proposed to the World Health Organization's (WHO) meeting in Switzerland on May 16-20, said Dr. Kamnuan. (TNA)
