Japan asks for stronger relations with Iran as a regional power

Japan’s Foreign Minister here Monday described Tehran-Tokyo relations as “friendly, good and growing” asking for further strengthening of ties with Iran as a regional power.

According to IRNA correspondent in Tokyo, the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a communiqué on Monday stating that Japan’s Foreign Minister Hirofumi Nakasone has expressed satisfaction over his current week visit of Iran in which he has met and conferred with his Iranian counterpart Manouchehr Mottaki and the IRI President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, on 80th anniversary of the official establishment of the two countries’ diplomatic relations.
The communiqué adds, “Nakasone has during those meetings expressed hope that the meetings between the two countries’ high ranking authorities would continue and that such meetings would lead to broader cooperation between Tehran and Tokyo, particularly in energy field and economizing in energy usage.”
According to the communiqué, Mottaki has said in his meeting with the Japanese foreign minister that one of the most important fields for cooperation between the two countries is joint projects on economizing in usage of energy.
Initial agreement in that respect had been reached during a meeting between President Ahmadinejad and Japan’s Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda in a meeting on the sidelines of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Summit in Italy last year.
The Iranian foreign minister added during the meeting, “We are asking for broader cooperation with Japan in various fields, including in oil and gas fields.”
President Ahmadinejad, too, has said in the meeting that there is no obstacle in the way for further broadening of Tehran-Tokyo relations.
Regarding Iran-US relations, the United States’ demand for direct talks with Iran and US President Barack Obama’s so called “change” policies regarding Iran, Ahmadinejad said, “Tehran is waiting to see real changes in US policies in practice.”
The Japanese foreign minister stressing that the Obama administration has seriously announced its will to enter direct talks with Iran, noted, “Tehran should not miss the gained opportunity.”
On arrest of the Iranian-US journalist Roxana Saberi, Nakasone said, “Roxana’s mother is Japanese and therefore we look at the matter from the humanitarian point of the view.”
Pointing out that he respects the independence of the Iranian Judiciary Force, Nakasone expressed hope that her judiciary process would be pursued leniently and compassionately and that there would be a survey regarding her judiciary procedure.
In that respect, Mottaki assured Nakasone that President Ahmadinejad, too, has asked for launching a survey regarding the said judiciary procedure.
Regarding Iran’s nuclear issue, Nakasone said, “It is of great importance for Iran to gain the international community’s trust in that respect.”
He added, “The 5+1 group has taken positive steps for resuming negotiations at earliest possible time.”
Regarding North Korea’s launching of its long range ballistic missile, he said, “This move is not only a threat against our security, but a threat against the regional peace and security.”
The Iranian foreign minister focusing on cooperation with North Korea, said, “Tehran has no nuclear, or missile cooperation with North Korea.”
The IRI President said, “North Korea has to solve this problem through negotiations.”
The Japanese foreign minister pointing out that Iran is today a regional power, asked for our country’s cooperation with neighboring countries aimed at boosting peace and stability in the region.
