Global coronavirus deaths surpass 325,000: study

More than 4.9M infected by virus, while Johns Hopkins data counts an excess of 1.7M recoveries
ANKARA More than 325,000 people have died from the novel coronavirus globally, according to data compiled Wednesday by US-based Johns Hopkins University. Its running tally counted 325,650 deaths, while the number of cases and recoveries stand at 4,947,929 and 1,719,406, respectively. The US is the hardest-hit by the global pandemic with more than 1.5 million cases and nearly 92,600 fatalities. The UK has the second-highest death toll with 35,785, followed closely by Italy's with 32,330. China, ground zero of the virus, has registered more than 84,000 cases and 79,310 recoveries. But it recorded a single fatality since early May and its death toll stands at 4,638. The barely changing figures continue to raise questions in and outside China. Overall, the virus has spread to 188 countries since it first emerged in China in December. Despite the rising number of cases, most who contract the virus suffer mild symptoms before making a recovery.
