FedEx Plane Bursts into Flames at Narita Airport, Killing Crew

Narita, Chiba Pref., March 23 (Jiji Press)--An inbound cargo plane
operated by U.S. parcel delivery firm FedEx Corp. burst into flames at
Narita International Airport Monday morning, killing 2 crew members.

This was the first-ever fatal accident at Narita, the largest
gateway to Japan east of Tokyo, and the first in Japan since June 1996, when
three died in a Garuda Indonesia jet's accident at Fukuoka Airport, the
Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism said.
The plane, which was flying from China's Guangzhou, went out of a
runway and flipped over after touchdown due to a gusty wind, officials of
Narita International Airport Corp. said.
The cargo jet was manned by a 54-year-old captain and a 44-year-old
copilot, and they were both confirmed dead, local police said.
It was carrying tons of flammable liquid, people familiar with the
matter said.
According to the Meteorological Agency, winds of up to 20.1 meters
per second were hitting the airport and surrounding areas around 6:50 a.m.,
when the accident took place.
