UAE, South Korea sign MoU on microelectronics, semiconductors

DUBAI, 26th March, 2018 (WAM) -- The Ministry of Education has signed a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, with the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy of South Korea, with the aim of promoting mutual academic cooperation related to microelectronics and semiconductors, which will promote the development of the UAE’s education system, support its leadership, and accelerate its development in science and technology. The MoU was signed during the official visit of President Moon Jae-in of South Korea, to the UAE, to promote their bilateral relations across many vital areas, including the exchange of academic knowledge in science and technology. The agreement stipulates that both sides will provide support in academic areas related to microelectronics and semiconductors in the UAE, by promoting academic exchange visits between relevant professors, researchers and specialists, as well as providing the necessary support to establish a microelectronics and semiconductors curriculum that is suitable for the UAE’s academic environment, and forming a specialist committee to ensure the MoU’s implementation. The MoU was signed by Hussain bin Ibrahim Al Hammadi, Minister of Education, and ‎Baek Woon-kyu, South Korean Minister of Commerce, Industry and Energy. Al Hammadi said that the MoU was signed due to the ministry’s desire to cooperate with the best international experts in science and technology, and South Korea is among the key exporters of microelectronics and semiconductors in the world. Therefore, the ministry is keen to cooperate with its Korean counterpart to serve its strategy to prepare future generations who are capable of using contemporary tools, prosper in a knowledge-based economy, and shape the future, he added. He explained that, as per the MoU, student exchange programmes will be organised between selected universities in South Korea and the UAE, which will provide students with credit hours in subjects related to microelectronics and semiconductors, as well as lectures and training on the subject’s fundamental principles and training opportunities, through partnerships with Korean companies and research centres.
