UN Security Council Extends Mandate of UN Mission in Iraq

BAGHDAD, Iraq (NINA) - The UN Security Council on Saturday adopted a resolution extending the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) until July 31, 2018. The resolution, drafted by Washington, expressed "grave concern over the current security situation in Iraq, which is the result of the continued presence of terrorist groups and the threat posed by these groups, especially Daesh (ISIS) organization." The resolution stressed that "the political leadership in Iraq should take decisions that would unite the country and find a long-term solution to the instability." In its resolution, the Security Council called on all political entities in Iraq to intensify efforts to overcome divisions and engage in a political process involving all, and that the leaders of the country engage in dialogue that contributes to a lasting solution to the current challenges facing the country. / End
