Jaafari At The UN Security Council Session: Iraq Has The Natural Right To Self-Defense

BAGHDAD / NINA / Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari confirmed that Iraq, as being a member of the United Nations and in accordance with the provisions of Article / 51 / of its Charter, has the normal right of self-defense if an armed attack occurs against a United Nations member. Jaafari, in a speech at the UN Security Council session to discuss the violation of Turkish troops to Iraqi sovereignty, according to a foreign ministry statement today, called the Council to demand Turkey to withdraw its troops immediately and the Council ensures by available means the immediate and unconditional withdrawal to recognized international border between the two countries and the non-recurrence of such unilateral actions that harm international relations, and exacerbate sectarian and nationalism tensions in the region and put regional and international security at great risk. Jaafari also called on the Security Council to condemn the Turkish occupation and illegal incursion against the will of Iraq as being a member of the United Nations and violate the rules and provisions of the Charter of the United Nations and the norms of international law. Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari arrived in New York on Monday to participate in the Security Council's session, which was held later to discuss the violation of the Turkish forces to the Iraqi territory and to participate in the special meeting to discuss the Syrian file. / End
