November Industrial Production Index plunges to 81-month low

BANGKOK, Dec 29 (TNA) - The current global economic meltdown has reached Thailand's industrial sector, reflected in the industrial production index in November contracting by 8.36 per cent, the second decline this year and the worst in the past 81 months, a senior industry ministry official said Monday.

Arthit Wuthikaro, Director-General of the Office of Industrial Economics, said that the world economic slowdown which began in mid-2008 had impacted Thailand's key industrial production segments such as ornamental goods, electronic spare parts, plastic resins and vehicles.

In November, the industrial production index was at 168.39 compared to the 183.76 figure recorded a year ago, down 8.36 per cent, he said.

Mr. Arthit said that industrial production grew 11.5 per cent during the first quarter of 2008 and then fell to 9.4 per cent and 5.8 per cent in the second and third quarters respectively.

It is projected that production will contract 6.3 per cent in the last quarter of 2008 due to the gloomy global economic slowdown, he said.

It is expected that Thailand's industrial production index would further contract by 5.5 per cent during the first half of 2009 and may improve during the second half of the year if government-sponsored economic stimulus measures are efficient and there are no political problems in the country, Mr. Arthit added.
