Bahrain participates in ETC meeting

Amman, May 21 (BNA): The 4th meeting of the Board of Governors of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) Technology Centre (ETC) was held in Amman in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan on May 19-20, 2015, which was attended by Ministry of Foreign Affairs Assistant Under-Secretary for Arab and Afro-Asian Affairs and Organizations and ECT Board Member, Dr. Shaikha Rana bint Daij Al Khalifa. The meeting elected the board chairperson and deputy, endorsing the nomination of Her Royal Highness Princess Somaya bint Hassan for the chairmanship of the ESCWA Technology Centre for the upcoming three years, while Dr. Naji Al Mitiri, from Kuwait, was elected as deputy chairman. During the meeting, the board also took note of ETC activities and achievements over the past three years as well as its 2015 work plan. It is noteworthy that the Amman-based ESCWA Technology Centre was opened in 2011 to be the first regional center ever established by the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia outside its headquarters in an effort to transfer technology to the member states for development purposes. The Board of Governors is made up of 13 members who serve as representatives of their countries for a renewable three-year term. They were joined this year by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Assistant Under-Secretary for Arab & Afro-Asian Affairs and Organizations, Dr. Shaikha Rana bint Daij Al Khalifa, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to represent the Kingdom of Bahrain. Her Royal Highness Princess Somaya bint Hassan is the current chairwoman of the ESCWA Technology Center.
