Oudomsay’s maize export declined by 28 per cent
(KPL) Oudomsay exports 95,000 tones of maize this year, almost 38,000 tons less than its plan.
The province said its decreased export of maize was due to the on going world financial crisis, which causes decline in comsuption.
According to Oudomsay Provincial Industry and Commerce Service, farmers in the province planted maize on 25,800 ha and yielded 133,000 tones last fiscal year 2007-2008.
“The decline in maize prices from 800 kip per kilogramme years before to around 400 kip this year worries farmers in the province,” said yesterday Head of Oudomsay Provincial Industry and Commerce Service, Mr. Somly Souphanthong.
Many are believed to stop planting maize this year as Thailand, one of the main markets to the province, has just announced in recent weeks that it would not import maize from Oudomsay meanwhile Thai farmers increase their maize production this year.
Excluding Thailand, China is another big market of Oudomsay’s maize.
