MRC to cooperate with START on combating climate change

(KPL) The Mekong River Commission (MRC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Global Change System for Analysis, Research and Training (START) in Vientiane on Thursday to cooperate in the combating climate change in the region.
The MOU was signed by Mr. Jeremy Bird, Chief Executive Officer of the Mekong River Commission Secretariat and Dr. Anond Snidvong, Director of the Southeast Asia Regional Centre for START.
Under the MOU, the two parties cooperate on conducting studies and undertaking related project activities regarding climate change and adaptation; hydrological studies of the Mekong River Basin; sharing of knowledge and information on operational modeling capabilities where they relate to climate change, mitigation or hydrological scenarios; data exchange, technical publications and study results.
Mr. Bird said the climate change and adaptation Initiative of the MRC would provide tools and processes for including climate change impacts and adaptation strategies into planning and management of water resources in the region.
The MOU is an attempt to look at the international climate change debate and bring it into action at the local level.
A lot of the work we are undertaking at the MRC, for example involves looking forward and modeling different developments are scenarios. For example, what is going to happen, when hydropower developments are completed and what options there are for increasing water supplies for the agriculture and industry,” he said.
The START is an international research network sponsored by International Geosphere Biosphere Programme (IGBP), International Human Dimension Progamme on Global Environment Change (IHDP) and World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) to promote multidisciplinary research on the interactions of human and environmental affecting and being affected by global changes.
START has nine regional research centres and nodes worldwide and its regional research centre for Southeast Asia is located in Bangkok, Thailand.
