Tehran mayor announces Iran's readiness to regulate Karbala municipal affairs

Tehran, Nov 22, IRNA - Tehran Mayor Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf here Friday announced Iran's readiness to regulate holy Karbala city's municipal affairs for a three-month period.

Qalibaf put forth the proposal on the sidelines of the Asian Capitals
and Metropolitan Cities Mayors Conference in Tehran in a meeting with
the head of Holy Karbala City Council, Nouri at-Tayyeb, adding, "It
was formerly agreed that the Iraqi Government would pass a
ratification to put us in charge of Karbala municipal affairs,
including the city's cleaning services, but thus far such a
ratification has not been issued."
He added, "Since the Iranians are deeply in love with Imam Hussain
(P), we are willing to offer lots of municipal services to the holy
city of Karbala."
The Mayor of Tehran once again reiterated that the central government
of Iraq was supposed to pass a ratification to commission Tehran
Municipality the task of garbage collecting without announcing a
tender for the purpose, adding, "As soon as such an agreement would be
signed we would be able to offer services there."
The mayor of Tehran added, "If that contract is signed Tehran
Municipality will also be ready to heed the holy Karbala city's
municipal affairs after the turn of the new lunar year, as of Moharram
1st."
During the meeting the head of Karbala City Council Nouri at-Tayyeb,
too, pointing out that the Iraqi administrative work force, and
particularly the Karbala city municipal work force are both competent
and equipped with appropriate facilities to heed their tasks, adding,
"Yet, the existing problem in that holy city is lack of sufficient
experience in heeding the municipal affairs."
At-Tayyeb referring to the fall of the former Iraqi regime reiterated,
"(The ousted, dead Iraqi tyrant) Saddam Hussain's efforts were always
aimed at leaving the holy Karbala as an undeveloped city.

He also oppressed the people of this region harshly, but we hope
relying on closer cooperation such affairs would be further regulated."
At the end of the meeting the head of Karbala City Council promised to
send a delegation to Iran in earliest convenient time to survey the
matter and possibly sign a contract so that Tehran Municipality would
as soon as possible be commissioned the task of regulating Karbala
municipal affairs.
