Mottaki to Assad: US policies in region defeated
Islamic Republic of Iran's foreign minister emphasised at a meeting here Monday evening with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad that US policies in the region have faced defeat.
According to IRNA correspondent in Damascus, Manouchehr Mottaki during the meeting while condemning the US helicopter attack against a Syrian village at that country's al-Bukamal border region with Iraq, said, "Such moves are made mainly aimed at fomenting crises among regional governments."
Delivering the IRI President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's message to his Syrian counterpart, Mottaki added, "The attack wa a sign of the US government's weakness and its antagonist regional policies." Four US combat helicopters attacked a village at Syria's Deyr al-Zour Province killing eight civilians, including five members of a family and wounding some more villagers.
The Syrian president, too, said during the meeting that the objective of the US attack was spreading the range of regional unrest and insecurity.
President Assad reiterated the need for continual consultations between the two countries, paying closer attention to bilateral strategic ties, efforts aimed at broadening such relations, and taking full advantage of the entire potentials in order to secure those objectives.
The Syrian president meanwhile referring to the developments in Palestine, said, "Our shared stands on Palestine necessitate continuation of consultations more than ever before."
Pursuing the implementation of the agreements reached during President Assad's last summer visit of Tehran, surveying potentials for further broadening of bilateral ties, exchanging viewpoints on latest regional developments, particularly in Palestine, Iraq and Lebanon, were other topics of Mottaki's Monday meeting with Assad.
The two sides also had a fifteen minute private meeting after their official talks at the presence of the Iranian and Syrian officials.
Mottaki who arrived in Damascus on Monday evening has so far also met and conferred with the Syrian vice president and the Syrian parliament speaker./end
