UN provides medical, food supplies to flash flooding-affected population in Yemen
SANA'A, Nov. 02 (Saba)- A number of UN agencies provided medical supplies, essential food and non food items to the rain-affected areas in the Yemeni eastern provinces.
In a press statement, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) said that the UN
immediately engaged itself in a joint effort with the Yemeni government for an
effective emergency response following the announcement of an emergency by President
Ali Abdullah Saleh, in the aftermath of the flash flooding which followed heavy
rains last month in the Hadhramout and Al-Mahara governorates.
"Emergency supplies were rushed in by UN agencies in the first 72 hours to provide
tents, blankets, utensils, mosquito nets, water purification tablets, generators,
etc", said UNDP.
"On the first leg of the relief operation, the World Health Organization (WHO) sent
an Inter-Agency Diarrhea Disease Kit (IDDF), weighing two metric tons with medicine
and medical supplies to the governorate of Al-Mahara This medical kit can benefit
nearly 10,000 persons for a period of 3 months. WHO is also supporting the Ministry
of Public Health and Population in enhancing disease surveillance systems, the
control of vector born diseases, and is supporting a campaign to prevent the
transmission of communicable diseases. WHO is procuring 7 metric tons of
insecticides for the Ministry of Public Health and Population for the indoor
residual spraying campaign for protection from malaria, dengue, leishmaniasis and
other diseases".
UNDP confirmed that UNHCR responded immediately to the flood catastrophe and
dispatched a team to Mukalla to identify priority humanitarian action for the
affected population.
"The next day, UNHCR dispatched 11 trucks carrying NFIs from the Aden warehouse
including 3,500 mattresses, blankets, mosquito nets, laundry detergent and bath
soaps. The refugee agency chartered a plane from Dubai to Seiyun carrying 700 tents,
500 plastic sheets, 32 plastic rolls and 500 kitchen sets which are currently in the
process of being distributed in Mukalla and Seiyun".
Team was sent to join UNHCR in the field in order to carry out a rapid assessment.
Simultaneously, UNHCR completed the successful distribution of NFIs to 173 families
in need. A further 2,800 tents, 6,000 mosquito nets, 3,000 plastic sheets, 3,000
kitchen sets and 10 plastic rolls as well as construction tools kits are currently
in the pipeline which will be subject fund availability.
WFP rapidly moved their in country stocks to Seiyun and Mukalla to cover the first
month’s ration of high energy biscuits and dates. In the past four days, thus far
WFP has reached around 1,600 beneficiaries with dates and high energy biscuits in
Mukalla and an additional 3150 beneficiaries 95 families will receive rations in
Katn today. WFP will be sending 372 metric tons of wheat flour, 60 metric tons of
pulses, 29 metric tons of vegetable oil, 30 metric tons of sugar, and 6 metric tons
of iodized salt.
UNICEF dispatched a truck of load of relief supplies today for the displaced
population in Seiyun and worst affected areas. The supplies include 50 water tanks
with the capacity of 2 cubic meters each, 3,000 blankets, 2,000 water jerry cans,
1,000 hygiene kits, and 900 boxes of water purification tablets (containing
approximately 9 million tablets). UNICEF and WHO will jointly be supporting the
Ministry of Public Health and Population to launch a measles and polio campaign for
the entire governorate.
UNDP will provide support for 2 generators and 300 insecticide spray pumps to
control disease vectors such as mosquitoes and water supplies.
A UN Mission comprising international and national professionals drawn from UNHCR,
UNICEF, WFP, WHO and IOM has completed a rapid needs assessment on humanitarian
needs in the governorates of Hadramout and Al-Mahara. At the same time, the World
Bank is carrying out a rapid assessment of infrastructure and shelter needs.
As more information and analysis become available, the UN will continue to
immediately mobilize additional support and to work closely with the national and
local government and other partners. The UN has dispatched a UN Disaster Response
Coordination team to assist with the coordination efforts of the UN and Government
as required. To further bolster the coordination of relief efforts, the UN is
setting up a coordination hub in Hadramout with a number of staff to assist the
government in distribution and the management of the crises.
