Delegation of India: A Second Commitment Period to Kyoto Protocol is an Urgent Need
Doha, November 28 (QNA) - The Indian delegation to the United Nations 18th Conference on Climate Change (COP 18), currently under way in Doha, has underlined the importance of the final approval of a second commitment period under the Kyoto Protocol.
Addressing a press conference today a representative of the Indian delegation expressed his country's interest in the reduction of the proportion of greenhouse gas emissions, after India became the second largest country in the world after China in terms of the number of clean development mechanisms and projects, which amounted to 1270 projects.
He said the main objective of the conference is the adoption of the second phase of the protocol, which is an urgent need for all, through common understandings that will bring justice between developed and developing countries. "
The representative added that Doha will not reach the aspired progress if rich countries did not pledge to provide more ambitious cuts to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases over the coming period, and to be legally committed to this matter."
The Kyoto Protocol was discussed in Kyoto, Japan in 1997 and officially brought into force in early 2005. The Kyoto Protocol came to be in order to regulate each nation’s greenhouse gas emissions at the Framework Convention for Climate Change. It sets a maximum limit for greenhouse gases to 37 industrialized nations and the European nations. (QNA)
