Qatar Rejects All Acts of Torture and Other Cruel Treatment or Punishment - Report

Geneva, November 12 (QNA) - The State of Qatar has reiterated that it will not hesitate to develop legislation and its concerned executive and judicial bodies periodically to prevent acts of torture. It also confirmed its rejection to all such acts, although there are no reports of acts of torture and other cruel treatment or punishment in the state. Qatar also noted the important role played by the UN Committee on the Convention against Torture in assisting States Parties to improve and strengthen and enhance its obligations, and implementation of the terms and provisions of the Convention in a transparent manner. Qatar also highly praised the efforts undertaken by the Committee in improving the way of presenting the periodic reporting by following a new method based on the list of issues before the report, which contributes to the concentration of the national dialogue in the most important issues, stressing in this regard to support and cooperate fully with the Committee . This came in the opening speech delivered here by HE Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Jabor Al Thani, Assistant Foreign Minister for International Cooperation at the discussion of the second periodic report of the State of Qatar, within the framework of the 49th session of the Convention against Torture Committee. He also added that "the State of Qatar is committed to a comprehensive and constructive dialogue and e with the UN Committee. He said Qatar's delegation to the discussions included various departments concerned with the implementation of the Convention such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Interior, Public Prosecution, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Labour, the Supreme Council of Health, Qatar Foundation for Child and Women Protection, and the Qatar Foundation for the fight against human trafficking. He added that the participation of these departments reflected the efforts that have been made ??for the preparation of the report to underline Qatar's seriousness in the implementing its commitments under the Convention. " He said the second periodic report of the State of Qatar was a fruit of a series of consultations, coordination and cooperation in the field of monitoring and implementation of the Convention, which has been prepared by a national committee formed by the Council of Ministers, demanding in this regard that this should be read in conjunction with other information provided by the State Monitoring Committees to promote the concept that rights are indivisible, and that these agreements complement each other, he added.
