Arab Forum on Asset Recovery Kicks Off Tuesday in Doha

Doha, September 09 (QNA) - Under the patronage of HH the Emir, Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani, the Qatar’s Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Centre will host, on Tuesday, at St. Regis Hotel, Doha. The three-day Forum aims to start a process that will develop in part into a regional network on the issue of asset recovery, through periodic meetings and other activities and to provide a repository of information, contacts and related good practices. The Forum has several objectives that include identifying the needs for country-specific capacity building, with clear and easy to monitor commitments, providing regional capacity building to practitioners engaged in tracing, freezing, and recovering the proceeds of corruption in addition to encouraging G8, Partner and Regional countries to introduce policy changes and legislative/institutional changes needed to facilitate effective asset recovery and providing a platform for potential bilateral and multilateral side-meetings between the countries seeking asset recovery and the various G8, Partner and Regional countries. Invitations to the forum were sent to the international and regional organizations concerned with asset recovery issues, including the World Bank, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the Arab League, the Cooperation Council for the Arab Gulf States (GCC), United Nations Development Programme, the Financial Action Task Force for the Middle East and North Africa to combat money laundering and terrorist financing and the Stolen Asset Recovery Initiative (StAR).
