Al-Nassir Wishes All Success to Lakhdar Brahimi in Syria

New York, August 18 (QNA) - The President of the General Assembly, HE Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser has welcomed the appointment of Lakhadar Brahimi, as the Joint Special Representative of the United Nations and the League of Arab States for Syria. In his phone call Saturday with Brahimi, President Al-Nasser thanked him for his acceptance to undertake this crucial assignment aimed at ending the ongoing violence and bloodshed in Syria, including the implementation of the UNGA resolutions. Brahimi brings to this difficult task his well known experience, credibility and diligence, President Al-Nasser wishes him success in his endeavours. The President of the General Assembly also wishes to express his gratitude to former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan for his relentless efforts in the Syrian crisis. In a related development, and on the occasion of Eid Al-Fitr celebrations, Al-Nasser late Friday expressed his "sincere wishes to all Muslims and Nations around the world for peace, good health and prosperity." "This celebration marking the end of fasting of the Holy month of Ramadan, also comes close to the conclusion of this 66th session of the UN General Assembly. As we celebrate Eid Al-Fitr, we also remember in our prayers the millions around the world who are suffering from deprivation, occupation and all forms of violence, persecution and suppression," his press office said in a statement issued late Friday. It added that during such happy occasions, "we should remember that we can always work together for a collective response to various global challenges. The faith we have in our constructive dialogue is key to serving humanity and realizing the benefits we share from diversity." The Assembly's current 66th session, which is presided over by Al-Nasser, ends on September 18th.(QNA)
