Precautionary measures for refugees in Lahj
LAHJ, Oct 13 (Saba) - Secretary of the Lahj Local Council Ali Haiderah Matir has said that the province local authorities have begun taking precautionary measures to make sure that African people arriving in the province are refugees.
Matir said at a meeting with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees
(UNHCR) Caire Burjwa that with the influx of African refugees to the province
particularly Somali ones the authorities must take precautionary measures to find
out if those who arrive are refugees or illegal immigrants.
The measures would be in accordance with rules regulating such matters and those
adopted by Yemen and the UNHCR, Matir said.
He added the move aims at securing the safeguard of refugees and handing them over
to the UNHCR to register them at the Kharaz refugees camp.
Burjwa praised the Yemeni efforts to tackle the issues of refugees as well as their
cooperation with the UNHCR in all its activities.
Burjwa affirmed the UNHCR in collaboration with concerned authorities,
non-governmental organizations and local authorities will conduct a research study
on the water quantity as part of an effort to solve the problem of water at the
shelter.
