Syrian opposition: Foreign intervention - the only way to resolve the crisis in Syria

Azerbaijan, Baku, May 31 /Trend A.Taghiyeva/ Foreign intervention is the only remaining option for resolving the crisis in the country, head of external relations of the oppositional Syrian National Council Ridvan Ziade said. "We really have no other options so foreign intervention is the only chance to protect the Syrians" Ziade said. Earlier, France and Belgium said they would take part in a military intervention in Syria, if such a decision to be made by the UN Security Council. Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey said earlier that the Pentagon is ready to develop military options against Syria. Ziade said that the international community should deal with the Assad regime and he must bear responsibility for the bloodshed of innocent people. Referring to Russia's support for the Syrian regime, Ziade said the Syrian National Council has confirmed reports that Russia financially supports the Assad regime, and carries oil on its own tankers from Syria to India and China. In his view the adoption of a resolution on Syria by the UN Security Council will be delayed further due to the support of Russia. "Syrian opposition did not bank on Russia in the matter of resolving the crisis" Ziade said Earlier, Syrian President Bashar Assad said during a meeting with UN and Arab League's Joint Special Envoy for Syria Kofi Annan that the successful implementation of the Annan Plan is not possible without a victory over terrorism and stopping smuggling of weapons into the country. On the eve of the visit of the Arab League's Joint Special Envoy for Syria Kofi Annan to Damascus who arrived in Syria on Tuesday, there was a brutal attack on Houla village near the city of Homs in the west of the country, as a result of which more than 100 civilians were killed. After that, the ambassadors of Syria to the United States, Spain, UK, Italy, Canada, France, Australia, Germany, Japan, Turkey and other countries were declared persona non grata. The Syrian authorities deny any involvement in the tragedy and blame Islamic militants for the killings. It was noted in a letter to the UN Security Council sent by the foreign ministry of the country that the terrorists used knifes during the attack on Houla, , which is the "signature" of Islamist militants. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Syria, several hundred armed terrorists were participating in the attack. Syria has been covered by anti-government speeches for more than a year resulting in violent clashes. According to UN figures, the total number of victims in the country exceeds 10,000. In turn, the Syrian authorities say the number of those killed in clashes was over 2,500 soldiers and police officers against whom there are well-armed militants. There is an agreement on a ceasefire within the plan of the UN and Arab League special envoy on resolving the situation, Kofi Annan. However, the conflict sides regularly report about new armed incidents and victims. Do you have any feedback? Contact our journalist at agency@trend.az
