NAJIB PRAISES ABDULLAH FOR HIS SINCERITY
KUALA TERENGGANU (Malaysia), Oct 10 (Bernama) -- Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's decision not to seek re-election as Umno president next March reflects the prime minister's sincerity in placing the interests of the people, party and nation above everything else, Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak said Thursday.
He said Abdullah's decision was in keeping with the Umno tradition of
allowing the power transition process to take place in an orderly, proper and
smooth manner.
"This has been the Umno practice, way and tradition which has determined
the
nation's stability and prosperity," he told reporters after a reception with
Terengganu Umno Liaison Committee members and community leaders in this capital
of east coast state of Terengganu.
Najib, who is Umno deputy president, recorded his highest appreciation and
thanks to the prime minister for his trust in his (Najib's) capability to take
over the leadership of the party and government.
Earlier, when addressing the function, Najib said Abdullah's decision was
the result of discussions and understanding between both of them as the nation's
top two leaders.
He said that as the deputy, he would never go against the leader even
though
that was seen by some quarters as him (Najib) having no stand of his own.
"As the deputy, I have to show my loyalty. Don't tell me that at meetings I
have to oppose and go against the leader ... that's not the way, that's very
bad.
"But I told Pak Lah (Abdullah) that we have to come up with a formula and
that it must offer a win-win situation. So, I had discussions with Pak Lah and
he decided he would not defend the post of Umno president.
"This was what Pak Lah conveyed to me personally, one to one. When (the
time) it was to be carried out was a secret he and I shared. But we had an
understanding and, finally, he made the announcement at the Barisan Nasional
(BN) supreme council meeting Wednesday.
"Pak Lah is aware that the people want the transition of power to be
expedited and he adhered to their wishes and accepted that," he said.
Najib said the transition of power was already being implemented when
Abdullah handed him the finance portfolio recently.
Abdullah and Najib switched the finance and defence portfolios on Sept 17.
