UMNO LEADERS NEED TO EFFECT CHANGE TO WIN OVER PEOPLE - NAJIB

KUALA TERENGGANU (Malaysia), Oct 10 (Bernama) -- United Malays National Organisation (Umno) leaders must not think too much of their position in the party, but to really understand the aspirations and needs of the people so that the party would remain relevant, said party deputy president Najib Razak.

He said the world had changed a lot, so Umno too must change as a party
that
was a pillar of strength for the Malays in order for it to remain in power. Umno
is the political party leading the ruling Barisan Nasional Coalition

"Umno must be the mirror and voice of the people. So, our only goal must
not
be winning party positions. If we win the division's top post, it does not mean
our struggle ends there or we are in a comfort zone.

"Like I've told the Kelantan Umno leaders that they needed to seriously do
something to wrest the state back from the opposition," he said at a gathering
with the Terengganu Umno Liaison Committee and community leaders, in this
capital of east coast state of Terengganu Thursday.

"In Terengganu, we also had a bitter experience of being the opposition.
When Umno lost the state then, the Terengganu Umno leaders appeared so dejected.
This should be a lesson for us as the world around us is dynamic and constantly
changing.

"We need to know the people's aspirations and effect changes so that they
are happy with us....we too will feel good," he added.

Najib said all Umno leaders, whether at the state or divisional level,
should be humble and people-friendly.

"Village folk are not difficult (to please)...they just want us, as
politicians, to be approachable always. When we are in our car, we cannot fall
asleep as we won't be able to wave back at them, otherwise they could feel
hurt," he elaborated.

Najib said the 12th general election was a bitter experience for Umno and
Barisan Nasional (BN) when it lost five states to the opposition.

"We realise this is a big challenge as Umno is still the yardstick for the
country's politics. Although not as strong as before, Umno's leadership in BN is
still looked up to.

"People look at how Umno resolve its leadership problems. If it can solve
these problems, they would have more respect for Umno," he said.
