AZERBAIJAN PLANS CONSTRUCTION OF POWER NUCLEAR INSTALLATION

Baku, 08 0ctober ,(AzerTAj)The government of Azerbaijan has allowed building a nuclear reactor in the country, and now is expecting official acknowledgement of the project by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Adil Garibov, Director of Institute of Radiation Problems of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan
said.

As stated, if this issue will receive positive continuation we expect decision by
IAEA on the reactor in January 2009. Two years will go on research of possibilities
and acknowledgement of requirements of republic in the nuclear reactor, and also its
safety. During this time, the personnel should be prepared, the regulating body, and
also the reactor location are to be confirmed. For the preparatory works, IAEA will
allocate $270 thousand. Prior to the beginning of reactor building the relevant
joint report will be presented to the government of Azerbaijan.
“Building of the nuclear reactor, capacity of which will make about 30-35 megawatt,
is planned for 2011. By estimations, for this purpose it is required at least 70
million AZM,” Adil Garibov noted.
“Necessity of installation of the nuclear reactor is clear not to all, in
particular, to the “green movement”, however, it is necessary to notice that the
fact of possession nuclear reactor to what, for example, aspires the neighboring
Georgia, will positively impact on strategic image of the country”, Adil Garibov
added.
