GMS Development dialogue to find ways for food security in region

(KPL) Senior agriculture officials from Great Mekong Subregion (GMS) met on 23 September in Vientiane to discuss ways of ensuring food security at the household level through regional integration and co-operation.
The delegates exchanged views on the current global food price trend and its impact on the region as well as strategic policies to address food security challenges. The discussion aimed to help senior policy-makers identify the roles of GMS countries in solving the crisis through regional and international co-operation.
The GMS which comprises Cambodia, People’s Republic of China, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam will discuss ways of curbing further increases of food prices by forging collective agreement to promote rice exports and establish a food reserve scheme under the ASEAN + 3 framework.
The delegates exchanged information, knowledge and technologies from research and development and best practices that promote efficient irrigation, land cultivation and farm management, and post-harvest handing and management.
“About 1.2 billion poor people in the Asia-Pacific region are at risk because of high food prices. We need immediate and long-term solutions to help them,” said Mahfuzzudin Admed, Senior Agricultural Economist of ADB’s Agricultural, Environment and Natural Resources Division in the Southeast Asia Department.
The meeting was sponsored by the Asian Development Bank.
ADB, based in Manila, is dedicated to reducing poverty in Asia and Pacific through pro-poor sustainable economic growth, social development, and good governance. Establish in 1966, it is owned by 67 members - 48 the region.
