Payback violence in PNG leaves 16 dead

AAP - Sixteen Papua New Guineans are dead after a jilted lover sparked a running tribal fight in the Highlands region.

Earlier this month an Enga Province woman left her new husband to return to live
with her first husband, who was from a different tribe.
This spurred the deserted man to kill a relative of his wife's first husband.
The killing prompted payback violence that has left 16 dead since September 12.
Enga Police Commander Michael Chare told PNG's National newspaper the dead were
killed with high-powered firearms.
Chare appealed for peace and said the two warring parties would meet on Wednesday.
"Angered by the woman's action, the tribesman retaliated and a murdered a relative
of her first husband," he said.
Twelve houses were burnt, scores of people were injured, and livestock was
slaughtered during the violence.
