NAM issues pro-Iran statement

Vienna, Sept 20, IRNA The group of Non-Aligned Movement states to the International Atomic
Energy Agency on Friday issued a statement in support for Iran's
peaceful nuclear activities.

The NAM statement issued after a two-hour closed-door session in the
IAEA Vienna Headquarters on Friday, will be read in upcoming IAEA
Board of Governors' meeting.

Iran's IAEA Ambassador Ali-Asghar Soltanieh told IRNA in Vienna on
Friday that the statement fully reflects statement of the NAM Foreign
Ministers' Tehran meeting and will be included as the Agency's
documents.

Soltanieh said NAM states also ratified in the meeting that the NAM
head would in a letter urge the Director General to put the issue of
Israel's nuclear capability officially on agenda of the IAEA annual
general conference.

He said the meeting also approved clearing Middle East of any nuclear weapons.

To this end, he added, Arab states have prepared text of resolution on
Israel as NAM is currently investigating it.

Asked about certain moves to issue a resolution against Libya in
future IAEA Board of Governors as it has some references to Iran,
Soltanieh said the NAM states had in their meeting agreed that any
esolution to be released in the case of any of the NAM states should
be with NAM's consent.

"Any resolution issued against any country that would also concern
other countries would be opposed by NAM," he added.

There are rumours in Vienna that western states are trying to ratify a
resolution in connection with Libya which would welcome and support
the country's full cooperation with the IAEA as it will ask Iran to
have similar cooperation.

As for upcoming IAEA Board meeting in Vienna, Soltanieh said there
will not be a special issue under discussion in the meeting.

"Regarding NAM statement, which is important and envisages full
support of foreign ministers, there will be no atmosphere for such
measures as resolution," he added.

Concluding his remarks, Soltanieh said, "Though there were some
discussions on the resolution, there is no such a possibility however
regarding consultations made to that effect."
