Abu Rudeineh Hails HH the Emir's Support For Palestinian Rights

Doha, August 24 (QNA) - HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani's efforts to protect the rights of Palestinians suffering under Israeli 'killing machines' have been praised by Senior Aide to President Mahmoud Abbas and Spokesman for Palestinian National Authority Dr. Nabil Abu Rudeineh.
Hailing Qatar's role in supporting Palestinian rights, in an exclusive interview with Qatar News Agency (QNA), Dr Rudeineh said, "Qatar has played a significant role in this cause. It has positively contributed in the ministerial meetings of the Arab Peace Initiative Committee (APIC) under the able and wise chairmanship of HE the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabor Al Thani."
Qatar has actively participated in all the committees functioning under the APIC at both political and technical levels, said President Abbas's aide and stressed the Palestinian position in this political battle has been unequivocal. He praised HH the Emir and the State of Qatar for using all capacities, relationships and friendly ties in order to achieve the just demands of the Palestinians.
Replying to a question on Palestine seeking full membership in the United Nations, Dr Rudeineh said, "The Arab-Palestinian efforts are continuing on a large scale and the Arab, Palestinian delegations and committees are fully co-ordinating with each other. The best example of this was the last ministerial meeting of the APIC hosted by Qatar yesterday night. This was the third successive meeting in Doha."
He added that mechanisms have been put in place and experts are working to achieve this goal. Efforts are also on to involve other countries that recognise the Palestinian state as well those who are yet to do so. "I'm sure all this will bear positive results," he said.
On the fears of a US veto at the UN Security Council meeting, he said, "We will use our natural rights and we have the backing of Arab states regarding our UN ambitions irrespective of the US veto. We then hope to go to the UN General Assembly, backed by Arab and international support. The committees functioning under APIC will continue their work, be it legal or political, to communicate and consult various international legal bodies to achieve our objectives.
Regarding the talks between Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and US on this issue, Dr Redeineh said, "The talks with US are continuing. However, after the failure of the International Quartet to come up with a statement on support for Palestine at the last meeting there are fresh attempts being made to get a statement clarifying their position on Palestinian rights. We are not sure whether this statement will be issued or not and whether it will give a push for new efforts."
From now on until September efforts will step up as European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton arrives in Ramallah on August 27. Following this European Foreign Ministers will meet on September 2. Then Palestinian delegations will travel to key countries in the world which is in agreement with a number of Arab countries to engage in political talks with these parties, he said.
On the communication between Palestine and the US, Dr Redeineh said, "President Abass' position is very clear on this issue and we are going to the United Nations due to the stalled negotiations and as long as Benjamin Netanyahu continues to reject the clear terms of reference for the peace process and the continuation of Israeli settlements.
"The Americans know our stand very well," the Palestinian President's aide said. "We have already told the US that we are ready for negotiations when all conditions are met. However, the time is running out particularly if no serious initiative comes out from European and US sides. This is why we are compelled to seek UN help."
Dr Redeineh stressed that we are in touch with the US and pointed out that President Abbas yesterday met with US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Jeffrey Feltman in Doha before the APIC meeting, and a week ago received the American Consul in Ramallah. One month ago a Palestinian delegation had visited Washington.
