Seoul Auction to present paintings by Lichtenstein, Warhol, De Kooning in Hong Kong By Kim Young-gyo

SEOUL, Sept. 19 (Yonhap) -- A Seoul-based auction house will hold a sale of
paintings by renowned American artists in Hong Kong next month, auction officials
said Friday.
The ten-year-old Seoul Auction said it is to launch its first auction series in
Hong Kong on Oct. 7, presenting artwork by American pop artists Roy Lichtenstein
and Andy Warhol, and abstract expressionist Willem de Kooning.
It is the first time for a South Korean auction house to stage an auction in a
country other than South Korea.
"As it is our debut season, we thoughtfully selected artwork in order to impress
our potential customers in Hong Kong," Yoon Cheol-kyu, president of Seoul
Auction, said to reporters in a preview exhibition for press.
"Still Life with Stretcher, Mirror, Bowl of Fruit" by Roy Lichtenstein and
"Untitled XVI" by Willem de Kooning are expected to draw the keenest attention,
along with "Mao," Andy Warhol's portrait of Mao Zedong, one of the most
influential figures in China's modern history, Yoon said.
Lichtenstein's 1972 painting is part of his still life series, whose main theme
was ordinary objects such as mirrors, bananas, grapes and kettles.
De Kooning, who was one of the major abstract expressionists in the 1950s along
with Jackson Pollock, expressed happiness in life after overcoming death in his
"Untitled XVI," created in 1981. The painting is acknowledged as his ultimate
masterpiece for its composition and expression, and beautiful brush strokes.
The sale of 123 works, valued at around 43 billion won (US$37.8 million) will
feature work in four main categories: Western art and art from China, Japan and
Korea, officials said.
Also entrusted to Seoul Auction are two pieces by Chinese artist Zeng Fanzhi, who
became successful as a painter with his "Mask Series" and "Pink Nude on Floral
Sheet," produced in the 1930s by San Yu, whose fusion of the East and West vastly
affected Chinese art and the development of Chinese tradition.
Four pieces by Paik Nam-june, a world pioneer of video art, are to be presented,
including "Jang Young Sil," a robotic sculpture with the name of one of the most
brilliant scientists in medieval Korea, and "Night Flight," a figure of an
airplane arranged with monitors on a steel-frame structure.
Park Soo-keun, who has become a favorite 20th century artist in Korea, reveals
the goodness and sincerity of human beings through ordinary people in two of his
works, "Women on Roadside" and "People on Roadside."
