Govt warns business over hacking

SYDNEY, July 27 (AAP) - The federal government is warning businesses to protect themselves after the arrest of a 25-year-old man who is facing 50 charges in relation to online hacking.
David Cecil, from the central western NSW town of Cowra, is alleged to have hacked into a number of networks, including a service provider of the national broadband network (NBN).
He faced court on Wednesday.
Attorney-General Robert McClelland said businesses must be vigilant with online security.
"Simple precautions can be very effective - such as employee education, monitoring network traffic, completing background checks on staff and robust account and password policies," Mr McClelland said in a statement.
Justice Minister Brendan O'Connor said malicious computer hacking would not be tolerated.
"Such criminality poses a serious risk to companies, and in the worst cases can threaten security and economic prosperity," Mr O'Connor said in a statement.
He said cyber crime was increasing as technologies evolved.
"The internet and other technologies provide great benefits to our society and economy, but they also open new avenues for criminal exploitation and we all need to be aware of that."
