GPC confirms commitment to EU recommendations

SANA'A, Sep. 12 (Saba)- The ruling General People Congress party
(GPC) renewed on Friday keenness to strengthen the democratic
approach of Yemen and develop electoral procedures.

In a press release, The GPC pointed out the importance of taking
advantage of all the experiences and views which always aims at
developing democracy in the country.

"As the GPC is ready to participate in the upcoming parliamentary
elections, it renews commitment to all views regarding holding of
fair and free elections, particularly the recommendations of the
European Union Observation Mission issued after the 2006
presidential and local elections, which were approved by Yemen's
political parties", the GPC added.

The GPC accused the opposition alliance of Joint Meeting Parties
(JMP) of obstructing national dialogue and the upcoming elections.

Meanwhile, the JMP leaders confirmed also the opposition parties'
commitment to the EU recommendations which aims at reinforcing
guarantees to hold free and fair elections.

After the presidential and local elections held in 2006, the EU
offered 36 recommendations to solve dispute between the GPC and the
JMP and improve Yemen's elections system. The GPC and the JMP
accepted the EU recommendations.
