Omar Asghar Khan Awami Assembly to be held on July 1-3


ISLAMABAD, June 22, 2011 (PPI): Sungis Annual Omar Asghar Khan Awami Assembly is a regular feature to advocate for and enhance support for the empowerment of the poor and marginalized groups of the society.

This important event provides an opportunity to discuss debate and identify the way forward about the priority concerns and challenges facing the civil society, says a hand out received here on Wednesday.

Among the participants are mainly representatives from local CBOs, Sungi partner communities from the working area. Some elected representatives, politicians, Govt officials and representatives of partner NGOs and media will also be present.

Subject experts and exponents of traditional knowledge such as artisans will be actively participating in this yearly event. Beside discussion panels and experience sharing sessions, cultural events and theatre performances are also planned.

The Assembly for 2011 would take place on July 1-3, 2011 at the Sungi Head Office, 1692/C Civil Lines Abbottabad.

Sungi Development Foundation is pleased to invite you to participate and join hands with Sungi in advancing the efforts for empowerment of the poor and marginalized.

The main theme for assembly is Peoples Sovereignty and Security; Way Forward and several sub themes have been identified for focus discussions like: Pakistan’s Constitution; Welfare State or Security State?, inclusive or exclusive of some regions and peoples?, how SAARC Constitutions structure the State?, what role do political/security establishments play in violations of peoples sovereignty, security, sectarian and ethnic divide?, who created and supports the terrorist nexus that violates people’s right to life and peaceful socio-economic development?, military budgets versus people’s sovereignty and security would be discussed. Prominent politicians, subject experts, representatives from civil society and delegates from SAARC countries will deliver speeches on these themes. This event is especially dedicated to celebrating Faiz Ahmed Faiz Centenary.
