East-West Economic Corridor receive assistance from ADB
VIENTIANE,JUNE. (KPL)- Kaysone Phomvihane, Phin and Sepon districts lining along the East-West Economic Corridor between the Second Lao-Thai Mekong Friendship Bridge in the west and Lao-Vietnamese border in the East in Savannakhet get access technical assistance from the Asian Development Bank to ensure their urban development.
Road No. 9 stretching from the Mekong Bridge to the Lao-Vietnamese common border plays a key role in facilitating the transportation along the East-West Economic Corridor.
The East West Economic Corridor is 1,600 km long running through four Greater Mekong Sub-region countries. It runs from Mawlamyine in Myanmar through Thailand, Laos and Vietnam. The portion of the Corridor in Laos is around 200 km long.
“Currently, Laos is experiencing development in many areas, especially economic growth. Basic infrastructure system is being developed, while living condition of people is improved due to the growth in domestic and foreign trading and small districts along the corridor are experiencing numerous changes,” said Deputy Minister of the Public Works and Transport Mr. Bounchanh Sinthavong.
Recognizing the socio-economic development plan of the government, the ADB has decided to provide technical assistance for urban development in districts set along the economic corridor through enhancing capacity building for local authorities in making decision on the priority projects of infrastructure development.
