PM urges strict measures against illegal loggers
VIENTIANE,JUNE.(KPL)- Prime Minister Thongsing Thammavong signed an order No 010/PM on June 2, 2011 urging line ministries, relevant agencies and provinces across the country to impose strict punishment against illegal loggers and timber traffickers.
The order bans the exploitation, trading and export of endangered wood including kayoung wood dalbergia cochinchinensis and urges relevant parties at all levels to strictly enforce the Prime Ministerial order No 17 dated 22 September of 2008 and the law on forestry.
Director of the Forestry Department, Mr. Silavanh Savathvong, said that illegal logging, exploitation and trading of endangered wood especially khayoung wood has been practiced traditionally for many years and although lawful measures had been imposed this illegal practice was increasingly prevalent in all parts of the country.
“This Prime Minister order will put a definite end to the exploitation of endangered wood,” said Mr. Silavanh.
